About Baie Du Cap- Maconde View Point

Between Le Morne and Baie du Cap is where you will be able to witness a stunning coastal view from up above on the Maconde View Point.

Located on the south coast of Mauritius, Baie Du Cap is a small, quaint village. The region is well known for its natural beauty and its wild, rugged coastlines.

With the picturesque land and seascapes, encompassing the red-coloured earth, the deep green forest, the lines of palm trees, and the sparkling blue sea by the side- you will have an incredible journey to the viewpoint, Maconde. It is set on a curved portion of the coastal road, on the peak of a small rocky cliff where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.

It is believed that the name “Maconde” originates from the slavery period, where runaway slaves from the Makonde tribe of Mozambique came to seek refuge. Others believe that is was named after the governor Jean Baptiste Henri Conde, who built an outlook on the cliff.

This area was generally inaccessible until the 1920s, when the first road was built. The low-lying coast and uneven surface made it quite a challenge to drive through but recent renovations have made it much safer. The winding road along the basalt cliffs with the ocean lapping against the rocks, make for quite a sight and is a popular spot for those interested in watching the ocean swells.

The viewpoint can be accessed by climbing up a set of narrow stairs. Here you will be able to admire the remarkable ocean, the nearby coastal village and the occasional fishermen on the shore.

Comments

  • The site is especially popular during weekends, so to avoid crowds it is recommended to visit early or during the weekdays.
  • It can be quite windy on somedays at the top of the viewpoint.
