About Port Louis Central Market

We know that you will probably never be fed up with beaches but a trip to the Central Market located in Port Louis is a must for anyone visiting Mauritius.

Port Louis, being the capital of Mauritius, is one of the if not the busiest town of Mauritius. The streets of Port Louis are filled with shops selling a wide variety of products. Here at the bustling Central Market you will find shops that fit all your needs, ready-made garments, spices, jewellery, watches, shoes, crafts amongst others.

The main shopping point for Port Louis is definitely the Port Louis Central Market, also known as the Bazaar of Port Louis, is divided into sections that have various stalls selling different products.

The main section of the market is definitely for the fresh fruits and vegetables. Here, you will have a real feast for the eyes with the setting for the colourful fruits and vegetables.

Located on the first floor of the Central Market, is the famous Craft Market. Here you will have a large choice of locally manufactured souvenirs, spices, and local handicrafts at affordable prices. We are sure that you will definitely find a gift even for the most difficult person you know. We definitely recommend indulging and doing some shopping.

You must have worked up an appetite with the shopping! Head to the next section of the Central Market where all the street food stalls are found. You will have a wide variety of choices here for the street food and you will surely find something to your taste. We do recommend tasting the dhall puri, made with split chickpea and flour and the famous alouda, almost like a milkshake with basil seeds, grated jelly and sometimes a scoop of ice. If you wish to try some of the local snacks, you will find a large choice of samoussas (fritters filled with potatoes), bajas (fritters made with chickpea flour) or gato piment (fritters made with yellow split pea and chilli).

The Central Market remains busy throughout the week as it is one of the main shopping spots for locals and attracts people across the island for shopping. It is definitely worth a visit for you to learn more about how locals live and experience the Mauritian vibe.
